Mr. Kord Campbell, a software creator, spends most of his time using multiple modes of technology. The excessive use of technology – “two computer screens alive with e-mail, instant messaging, online chats, a Web browser and the computer code he was writing” – caused him to overlook an e-mail from a company that wanted to buy his Internet startup (Richtel 1). He fixed the problem and the deal still went through successfully. This man is addicted to technology due to his job. Even when he turns away from his gadgets, he becomes distracted waiting for his phone to go off. “His wife, Brenda, complains, “It seems like he can no longer be fully in the moment” (Richtel 1). Mrs. Campbell thinks that if everyone unplugged the atmosphere and mood of all would grow since everyone is finally mentally present (Richtel 1-6). The Campbell’s are an example of how portable technology distracts people and disrupts their lives. Are the Campbells a typical modern-day family, or are their technology habits abnormal? If this is a typical family, then what does that say about modern American life and our reliance on technology? The Millennial Generation is being affected most by the increasing use of portable technology. Millennials – those born after 1980 – say that what makes their generation unique compared to past generations is their technology use. The most common type of portable technology for this generation is cell phones. 83% of Millennials sleep with their cell phone on or next to their bed (Pew Research). Twenty years ago, this was unheard of! Social media is the new craze within the past ten years. 75% of Millennials have a profile on a social networking site, and of that 75%, 29% of them visit these sites several times a day. Out of all of this time spent on the internet, 62% connect wirelessly from a laptop or hald-held device when away from home or work. 74% of those Millennials are in college (Pew Research).
